Haqqani meets US officials, discusses release of Pakistanis at Guantanamo

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani along with other officials met the US State Department and Pentagon officials on Sunday and discussed the release of five Pakistanis detained at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, ARY One World reported.

According to the channel, the Pakistani officials were told there were only five Pakistani detained at Guantanamo Bay. Haqqani said that the Pakistani prisoners should be released and handed over to the Pakistani authorities so that they could be prosecuted in Pakistan if there were any charges against them.

The channel reported that Ume Amaar Al Balochi, Majid Khan, Abdul Rabbani, Muhammad Ahmed, Ghulam Rabbani and Saifullah are the Pakistani detained at Guantanamo.

The US officials also told the Pakistani ambassador that one Pakistani prisoner Qari Muhammad Saeed was handed over to Pakistani officials at the PAF Chaklala base on August 29.

According to the channel, the Pakistani officials were told that Amaar Al Balochi was under trail in an army court. The Pentagon officials hinted at the early release of the other four Pakistani prisoners, the channel said.
